“On Seeing as a Writer”

Public Space- It is open to the outside but in the basement of the library at the same time.  There are many windows that look out onto the Saco, and the tables near the windows are the first to be taken.  The ladies behind the cafe counter talk to each while no one is in line.  Many people from around school come here to hang out or get their after workout shake.  The space is not quiet to say the least because every 5 minutes the blender runs making a new smoothie concoction.  When people see someone studying alone there, they normally look at them funny because it isn’t really a study place that most people can handle.  This is a social environment, as groups come in they all look at each other and say “where do you want to sit?”  What makes someone want to study in a loud environment?  Why do people always clump in groups instead of being independent when they have to go into the “public”?

Natural Space- Over looks the Saco and just far enough to see where the ocean meets the Saco.  Sometimes the sun peaks through the trees and warms up the sea breeze.  It is all rock underneath you with a small amount of slimy sea grass, and the only way to get there is a series of paths.  The ducks come over to the edge to get out of the water for a while.  You can see both a panoramic sunrise or sunset any day of the week.  Watching the boats go past is somewhat therapeutic to me.  Why don’t more people come here to relax and decompress?  Who formed the paths to get here?
