Why does narrative matter?

I believe that both Anne Hallward and Dr. Rita Charon would both answer the question, “Why does narrative matter” the same.  From watching the ted talks they both essentially say that narratives matter because it can help people connect on a deeper level.  Dr. Rita Charon tells of an example with a breast cancer patient.  She says how the patient continued to come in and would always ask if/when the cancer was going to come back.  Dr. Charon finally sat the patient down one day and connected with her through a story.  Through this story the patient realized that the thing that she was afraid of most was death, not of the cancer coming back.  Anne Hallward tells of a story about how someone came up to her one day and confessed to her that they had been jealous of her, Hallward could not believe it.  She thought about it and realized that by that person confessing that to her they probably reduced their stress and also will allow themselves to be closer to her now.  She took this philosophy and applied it to her own life.  She told her sister that she had been jealous of her for years.  By keeping this emotion and story inside of her she always felt that there was an elephant in the room when she was with her sister.  When she told her sister the elephant in the room went away and they are now closer than ever.  As stated previously I believe that both Dr. Rita Charon and Anne Hallward would answer the question, “Why does narrative matter” in similar ways.  Dr. Rita Charon would say that it would help the medical field think not only with their knowledge that they acquire during medical school, but for the professionals to use their “gut”, also known as intuition as well.  This would create an environment that the patient and the doctor become closer.  Anne Hallward would probably say that it will help people become closer and connect on a deeper level than they were before.
