TRIAC: Gee

Why does a child’s literacy progress regresses as they enter school and become a chore?  In Literacy, Discourse, and Linguistics: Introduction, by James Paul Gee he creates interesting points that can be applied to my question.  For example when Gee states what Metaknowledge is, “Metaknowledge is liberation and power, because it leads to the ability to manipulate, to analyze, to resist while advancing.”  This means that people have the power to decide how they want to interpret something.  This helps explain and answer my question because when people can not interpret a book and relate to it, it becomes a chore.  Then the reader eventually becomes disinterested in reading and writing and they stop striving to gain experience, and eventually regress.

  1. Erica,
Interesting point! I agree that without engagement and reflection (metaknowledge), students lose interest quickly. Good TRIAC paragraph. Don’t forget page numbers.
