“Gee and Discourses” #1

In Literacy, Discourse, and Linguistics:  Introduction Gee states a discourse as “forms of life which integrate words, acts, values, beliefs, attitudes, and social identities as well as gestures, glances, body positions, and clothes”. The movie Aladdin comes to mind when asked to find an example of discourses.  Aladdin basically lives on the street and then he meets Jasmine.  He instantly became infatuated with her and pretends to be a prince.  During the movie you can see that even though he looks like a prince because of his clothes, he is not.  His mannerisms are that of a person who had never been taught proper etiquette of a royal and is trying to pick it up as he goes.

  1. Hi, Erica,
Nice example! Do you think Gee would say that Aladdin is an apprentice to the Discourse of being a prince?
I look forward to hearing your thoughts,
    Jen
